Contraction of "reversing attenuator", a circuit often found in modular synthesizers. A typical reversing attenuator has a control knob with its mid-rotation position indexed as zero. Turning the control in the clockwise direction from this point gradually raises the level of the output. Turning the knob counterclockwise from the zero point also raises the level of the output, but the output is inverted from the input.
