Bounce, also known as New Orleans bounce, is a form of bass music that is said to have originated as early as the 80's.
History[]
When hip-hop spread outside its birthplace of the Bronx, it began to gain acceptance, especially in New Orleans. At first, the music was mainly local, and very similar to regular hip-hop. The first popular bounce artist was MC T. Tucker, real name Kevin Ventry. It flourished within New Orleans without much recgonition, but soon it would explode all over the world. Two of the most popular record labels, No Limit Records & Cash Money Records, pioneered by Master P, Beats by the Pound, Birdman, and Mannie Fresh, popularized the music worldwide. It has a solid fanbase all over the southern U.S., and a little less so everywhere else.
Structure[]
Bounce's main characteristics are call-and-response style parties and hypersexual Mardi Gras Indian chants & phrases. The genre uses a certain beat, dubbed the "Triggerman beat", sampled from "Drag Rap" by The Showboys, Cameron Paul's "Brown Beat", c2K Vocah Redu's "Roll Call", Big Freedia's "Gin In My System", and Derek B's "Rock The Beat". The sound was shaped by recycling and imitation of Drag Rap, including its opening chromatic tics, intermittent shouting of the word "break", whistling as an instrument, vocoders, and a brief & repetitive melody & quick beat, all easily produced with synths & drum machines). Another common feature in Bounce is the shouting out of a certain area, such as a neighborhood or parish, all within the New Orleans area.
