In the context of an envelope generator, usually refers to a period of time between the gate going high, and the beginning of the attack phase. An ADSR-type envelope generator with an added pre-attack delay is often described as an "DADSR". A use for this type of envelope generator include making percussion sounds with a "stuttering" dual or multiple attack, by means of using several DADSRs in parallel with different delay settings. Another use is to slowly bring in additional layers for an evolving pad or drone-type sound.
