Experimental dubstep is dubstep that uses unconventional textures and structures, as well as innovative sound design. There are experimental styles in many forms of dubstep such as brostep, deathstep, and riddim.

Experimental Riddim[]

Experimental Riddim is characterized by its minimalist, repetitive sounds, often built around deep basslines and syncopated rhythms. Experimental Riddim retains the rhythmic foundations and structure of the classic Riddim, with an emphasis on heavy bass, repetitive wobbles, and syncopated drops. The tempo is often between 130 and 150 BPM, as in Dubstep and the classic Riddim.

What sets experimental riddim apart is how it is much more free and has a more creative approach to sound design. Producers venture into abstract sound textures, distortion effects, and unusual sound modulations. They often use glitchy sounds, distortions, and noises that would not be commonly heard in the standard riddim. Rhythms and basslines can be altered, distorted, or integrated in unconventional ways. Unlike traditional riddim, which often follows a linear structure with well-defined builds and drops, experimental riddim can defy these expectations by including unexpected breaks, sudden changes in tempo, or more atmospheric passages before returning to heavier bass. Experimental riddim can even incorporate cinematic atmospheres, with ambient sound effects or distorted vocals, creating a more immersive and eerie experience. Sound textures become a central focus, often influenced by electronic manipulation and advanced production techniques.

Experimental Riddim borrows elements from more cerebral genres such as IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) or glitch, particularly in its use of erratic sounds, unpredictable variations, and musical structures that may appear chaotic or deliberately disjointed. Complex sound transitions and sudden pattern changes are often part of the tracks, with unpredictable sounds adding a sense of instability or innovation.

Psychostep[]

Psychostep is an experimental subgenre of dubstep that fuses elements of Industrial and deathstep with dark psychedelic sounds and moods. Unlike typical deathstep, it's much slower. It is distinguished by its blend of sonic intensity, syncopated rhythms typical of dubstep, and a gritty, overly distorted, and metallic tone inspired by genres like noise or glitch.
