Florida breaks, also referred to as Florida breakbeat, or Funky Breaks, is an early genre of electronic music.

History[]

The unique style of Florida breaks was unveiled during the late 80's at the Beacham Theatre in Orlando. It gained a popular underground scene as the Summer of Love era hit Orlando. From there, it simply exploded into the mainstream. It was wildly popular among native Floridans, marketed internationally as "Orlando friendly". There was no clear consensus on how it was supposed to sound, however, until Nick Newton, an English DJ, named his 1996 record Orlando, due to its popularity. Its popularity internationally waned in 2000, though it is still popular today.

Structure[]

The sound of Florida breaks is a mixture of hip-hop breaks, freestyle, electro and Miami bass originating from the 80's. It also took influences from 90's house & techno. It includes sampling of early jazz or funk beats from rare groove or popular films. It features vocal elements, and retains a hip-hop rhythm, albeit faster, more syncopated, and with a heavier bassline. It slows & breaks down often, then rebuilds to create happy atmospheres.
