In the context of a modular synthesizer, a module that combines a number of signal conductors onto a multi-conductor cable, to ease the process of connecting two or more cabinets together. The interconnect cable uses some form of multi-pin connector; the mating connector may be either on the panel of the module, or mounted somewhere else (typically a connector bulkhead on the rear of the case). At a minimum, the interconnect provides for some number of signals to be conveyed between cases; a set of numbered jacks are provided on the panel of the interconnect, and when a patch cord is plugged into a jack on the interconnect, it appears at the same numbered jack on the interconnect of the other case. This provides for a cleaner mechanism for routing signals between cases than stringing individual patch cords from one case to another, particularly if the cases are some distance apart. In synths that use banana jacks for patching, the interconnect generally provides for the signal ground to be interconnected also, since banana jack patch cords do not have a conductor for ground.

Interconnects may also convey power from one case to another. Usually, this involves some special method of connecting to the power bus in the case. The user must take into account the load of the additional case on the power supply when interconnecting power between cases.
