Melodic dubstep is a subgenre of dubstep that has drops that focus on the melody, unlike brostep, which uses growls and harsh often non-melodic elements.
Characteristics[]
Melodic Dubstep tends to use more ambient and atmospheric elements and is more related to dubstep and brostep in its tempo and drum structure rather than its sound design and general aesthetic. Like brostep, melodic dubstep has a snare on the 3rd beat, unlike riddim, which has a kick and a clap combined.
A drumstep variant of melodic dubstep also exists and is the same, but at a faster tempo and has a drum and bass beat, and is influenced by dancefloor drum and bass.
Subgenres[]
Thanks to its high popularity, melodic dubstep is also an umbrella term, designating melodic subgenres that have emerged from it, such as:
- Cinematic Dubstep, a melodic dubstep style with an emphasis on cinematic movie trailer-like music.
- Dubchestral, created by Russian DJ Instrumental Core, fusing orchestral music and opera with dubstep.
- Liquid Dubstep, a genre focusing on nostalgic aspects of Melodic Dubstep influenced by Liquid D&B, with a chiller mood, and closer to the 2000s Dubstep.
- Lovestep, created by Dirty South Joe and Flufftronix, focuses on the romantic and emotional, blending melodic dubstep and R&B.
- Purple Sound, a genre characterized by a melodic approach and influences from various musical genres.
- Or Trancestep, a hybrid between Trance and Dubstep, blending the soaring leads and atmosphere of Trance with the rhythm and bass of Dubstep.
Melodic dubstep also influenced other dubstep genres, such as brostep, deathstep, riddim, trapstep, and drumstep, which are also popular in the dubstep communities, giving rise to genres such as melodic riddim, melodic trapstep, and melodic drumstep.
