Moombahton is one of the world's most popular electronic dance music genres, that emerged in 2009.

Characteristics[]

Moombahton is a subgenre of House, it fuses Dutch House elements such as 4/4 rhythm and powerful synths, with reggaeton rhythms such as dembow, and its powerful 808 kicks and sub-bass, on a tempo that oscillate bewteen 108 and 115 BPM. The genre was created in 2009 by Dave Nada in Washington DC.

Popularization[]

Moombahton gained in popularization in the mid 2010s, by mainstream artists such as DJ Snake. The genre was also popularized in K-EDM : K-Pop bands such as BTS, BLACKPINK, (G)I-dle, Stray Kids or again Xikers helped to popularized the genre.

Subgenres[]

Thanks to its popularity, Moombahton creates subgenres during its development :

Moombahcore : Also Moombahstep, emerged in 2010 and coined by Skrillex, Moombahcore is a fusion of Moombahton and Brostep, but blends elements from miscellaneous genres like Complextro or Hardcore.

Moombahsoul : Also Moombahdeep, or Ambient Moombahton, Moombahsoul fuses Moombahton with Deep House, and is characterized by a deep and gentlee atmosphere.

MoombahTrap : A fusion of Moombahton and Trap EDM, that combines the Hi-Hats and vocals of Trap, with rhythm of Moombahton.

Tropical Moombahton: A summery styled Moombahton, that combines rhythms and percutions of Moombahton, with tropical percussions and instruments, gentle and tropical atmosphere, influenced by Tropical House.
