The opposite of a bandpass filter; it blocks frequencies within a certain range, letting through all others. In synthesizers, notch filters are less common than the other three basic types. They are more often used for noise reduction or elimination of undesirable artifacts in a signal, than they are for musical purposes. However, filters that provide formant responses use a combination of bandpass and notch filters to create the formant.
