Nu-style gabber, also referred to as mainstream hardcore, is the second wave of gabber emerging in the late 90s. It is slower and heavier than its predecessor with gabber's hard distorted bass kicks being wider in frequency and more resonant. The genre, riding on its early iterations already established success, quickly became incredibly popular, in Germany, Belgium, Italy, and especially the Netherlands to the point it became the most popular form of hardcore music. It has maintained this title of 'mainstream hardcore' since the late 2010s. Only now in the 2020s is the genre beginning to lose momentum. This iteration of gabber also is a large influence on uptempo hardcore and hardstyle; both derivative genres.
