One of several companies owned by Jack O'Donnell's holding company inMusic. Numark got its start in Rhode Island in 1971, manufacturing turntables and other equipment for use by radio stations. In the mid-1980s, Numark become one of the first companies to manufacture turntables specifically designed for turntabling, along with mixers and other equipment for the then-new field of hip hop DJ'ing. When Compact Discs began to replace vinyl, Numark developed the now-widely-copying paradigm for "virtual turntabling" with CDs, involving the use of a wheel about 5" (12.5 cm) in diameter, which can be turned in either direction and thereby influence the playback of a CD track by pitch shifting and varying the digital playback rate.

inMusic acquired Numark in 1992. Today, Numark continues with its core business: playback controllers and DJ mixing consoles and software. As well, it continues to manufacture turntables, one of the few manufacturers remaining in that market.
