In relation to electronic music in particular, a function of a synthesizer that controls the relative level of a specific signal in the left and right outputs of a synth having stereo outputs; some synths having stereo VCAs allow for panning to be controlled by a control signal (see also ping-pong). Also refers to a MIDI Controller message, type 10, which causes the receiver to execute a pan function.
