A panel, generally mounted in a rack, containing (usually) two rows of jacks which are wired to inputs and outputs of various signal generating, processing, and/or reproducing devices. By convention, outputs appear in the top row, with inputs in the bottom row; the placement of an output above an input in the patch bay’s layout may imply the presence of a normalled connection between the output and the input. Connections are made by plugging patch cords into the output and input jacks to send signals from outputs to inputs as needed.
