A computer program that stores and loads patch data from/to a synthesizer, usually via MIDI.A patch librarian is handy for organizing collections of patches, allowing patches to be categorized and usually stored with an “extended name” which is longer and more descriptive than the name that is displayed on the synth itself (if the synth even stores patch names at all). It allows patches to be rearranged into different banks and groups with different patch number assignments, for supporting different working situations (such as sets at a gig), and it effectively extends the synth’s patch memory by allowing patches not being used at the moment to be stored on the computer’s hard disk instead of in the synth. And, it provides a means of backing up the synth's patch memory and restoring it if the memory gets erased (such as due to a backup battery replacement).
