Rapidly panning or switching a sound between the left and right channels in a stereo mix. Some synthesizers, under control voltage or MIDI control, are capable of panning a sound across the mix much faster than a human hand operating a mixer pan control could do so, producing a unique disorienting effect on the listener (particular when listening through headphones).Judicious use of the technique can be quite dramatic, but it was overused in the early days electronic music and to many listeners the effect is clich├ęd.
