A type of MIDI message format which the standard allows to be sent in the middle of other messages. This is used for messages such as MIDI clock) in order to improve timing accuracy for these messages, but some synths have MIDI receiving software that has trouble dealing with the interrupted messages. Not to be confused with running status.
