In a filter circuit, feeding back the output signal, at a reduced amplitude, to its input. In the types of filter circuits usually used in synths, resonance has the effect of increasing the slope of the filter, and of creating an emphasis peak near the center or cutoff frequency, which makes frequencies at that peak louder. Some types of filters will, at a sufficiently high resonance setting, self-oscillate.
