A derisive term for a sample playback synth, stemming from the fact that such units often appear in stale pop music in which the performer uses the synth strictly as a cheap substitute for a piano, horn section, drummer, etc. This is somewhat unfair as some sample playback units actually possess fairly powerful synthesis features, but players who own such units sometimes don’t dig far enough into the manual to find out how to use them.
