A sample is a short recording of a waveform, sound, or phrase, usually ranging from a fraction of a second to a few seconds in lenghth, and intended to capture the essence of the sound being sampled. All modern sampler and sample playback synths digitize the sampled sounds and use digital memory to store the samples, although there have been instruments in the past, such as the Mellotron, which used analog samples.
