On a synth with patch memory, a patch that has its parameters set such that when the patch is selected, the synth produces no sound. Such a thing is sometimes used as a convenience in a setup where two or more synths are connected to the same interface and/or the same MIDI channel, when it is desired that one synth not produce any sound for a particular patch, as an alternative to some means such as manually turning down the synth's master volume, or disconnecting it from the interface. A silence patch might also be used as an alternate to turning off local control when the synth's keyboard is being used as a master keyboard for another synth.
