A mode of recording notes provided by many sequencers as an alternative to playing and recording the part in real time.In step entry, a starting point and note value is chosen, and then the user begins playing notes (either on a real keyboard or by clicking the mouse on a graphic of a keyboard on a computer screen). Each time a note is chosen, a note of the chosen pitch and value is entered in the score, and then the insert point is moved forward in time an amount equal to the note value (e.g, if the score is in 4/4 time and the chosen note value is half notes, the insert point will move two beats each time a note is entered). Some step editors have provisions allowing entry of block chords. Step entry is a form of quantization and is often criticized for that reason, but it has its uses for entering complicated parts, and it is sometimes the only method of composition available to musicians who have physical disabilities
