A synthesizer packaged with the same basic idea as a rackmount synthesizer; the miniaturized electronics are built into a small package, smaller than a full-sized keyboard instrument. A tabletop is, as the name suggests, packaged to sit on top of a table or desk, rather than mounted in a rack. However, unlike the case with rackmounts, not all tabletop units lack a built-in means of playing them. Some have short 1- to 2-octave mini keyboards or touch pads. Most drum machines are packaged as tabletop units, and they usually include a set of drum pads intended to be played with the fingers.
