A regular repeating variation in the volume, or amplitude, of a signal. In a synth, tremelo is accomplished by routing the signal to be modified through a voltage controlled amplifier, and using a low-frequency oscillating signal to control the amplifier. Tremelo is often confused with vibrato; they are not the same thing, but some circuits (particularly some in guitar amplifiers) labeled as "tremolo" or "vibrato" actually produce a combination of both.
