An audible stepping effect in a parameter that is being varied, caused by the parameter’s being digitized with insufficient resolution or at an insufficient rate. The classic example is that of a volume fader or slider on a digital synthesizer that is being moved, causing the sound being effected to audibly step up and down in volume rather than fading in and out smoothly. The phenomenon can also be heard in other parameters such as filter cutoff settings, pitch bends, etc.
